Drake provides our work space, our utilities, internet connection, and interns. See the details contained in the attached 2016 Agreement below. If you have questions about their responsibility, don't hesitate to contact the Office Manager or National Director! Both deal frequently with Drake.
Our partnership with Drake also impacts the flow of work during the year: they have Spring and Fall semesters each year. Take a look at their Academic Calendar for specific dates.
Key Items for Work
- Office key(s): You will be assigned an office key; some staff will also be assigned an interior door key based on need. This key is your responsibility! If you lose this key, you will be responsible to Drake Student Services for the cost of replacement ($100 for an Exterior door key, $25 for an Interior door key).
- Banner ID: this is your ID within the Drake system. It is represented on your physical ID card. It can be used to interact with Drake in the following ways:
- Submitting a request with Facilities, if something is wrong in our building (try to contact the Office Manager or National Director first)
- Submitting an IT ticket, if relevant to Drake IT. Please contact the Office Manager or IT Director or National Director first.
Steps for New Staff
- After completing paperwork to work for Vote Smart, your information will be passed on to Drake HR by the Office Manager in order to assign you a Banner ID. This is a unique, nine-digit ID that is created for you in the Drake system.
- This ID will be communicated to you by the Office Manager. They will then give you your ID to fill out your key form for documentation. They will also notify you when your key is ready. Take this to Student Services to get your ID made as well as pick up your key.
- If another staff member's key(s) is being transferred to you, then you will still complete a new key request form. Take this to Student Services, where they will document that the other staff no longer has the key and you now have the key.
- Drake will contact you when your key(s) are ready to pick up from Student Services.
Drake System Access: This online system is used for some campus-wide communications and tasks.
- With your Banner ID, you can set up your account at http://my.drake.edu/.
- Your User ID is your Banner ID. Your default password is your birthday in the following format: the first three letters of your birth month (the first capitalized); the two digits of your birth day; the four digits of your birth year; and an exclamation point. For example, "Jan011901!".
- When logging in the first time, you will be prompted to select several security questions of your choosing.
- Please reset your password to one of your choosing by going to password.drake.edu. Follow the steps there.
Drake Safety Alerts: If you so choose, you can sign up as a non-Drake faculty/staff/student to receive safety alerts to your personal cell phone. Text "DUBULLDOGALERTS" to 226787. This will opt you into the system. To stop receiving alerts, text "STOP" to the same number. You can also download the Drake Guardian mobile app.
Benefits at Drake: This is what has been identified so far that our status grants. Please contact Drake about any benefits you're unsure about and be sure to share them here!
- Gym access at a reduced rate
- Free Des Moines city bus rides
- Faculty pricing on some athletic events
- Library access
Remember, when on and around Drake's campus you are a representative of both Vote Smart and Drake. What you do and say will impact the perception of Vote Smart and our internship. Please conduct yourself as such and do your team proud!
Responsibilities at Drake:

- Not smoking or using electronic cigarettes on Drake property. This includes in the Vote Smart office space as well as the back parking lot, as both are owned by Drake University.
