Factcheck.org is a key data provider for [[FactcheckingData factchecks]].

As of January 2015, we were working on gaining access to their newly-developed API. Previously, we were using their website and RSS feeds to acquire their factcheck content. The biggest issue with their data is that while they do provide analysis and suggest summary judgments, they do not provide "rulings," so Vote Smart staff must read their analysis and assign their own rulings. Some of their articles do not measuring politicians' honesty, including but not limited to: "Fact of the Day," "Cash Attack," and "Factcheck Mailbag." We have previously found their "tags" to not be useful.

"2. Copyright and Use of Our Articles: Original FactCheck.org articles, Special Reports and Ask FactCheck items may be reprinted or distributed, without charge, and in any media. We ask that the editorial integrity of the article be preserved. We prefer that you copy and distribute the entire, original work without editing, but you may distribute an excerpt. If you distribute an excerpt, you should not edit the original in such a way as to alter the message or otherwise misrepresent the facts or opinions expressed. We also ask that credit be given to the author and to FactCheck.org, and that we be notified of the re-publication or distribution. In addition, when any article (including Special Reports, Ask FactCheck items and other material) or excerpt thereof is posted electronically, a hyperlink to FactCheck.org should be prominently displayed at the beginning of the republished work. You will be able to identify original FactCheck.org material by its byline and/or the copyright notice. However, if you are unsure if any item or content was originally published on FactCheck.org, you can send us an e-mail."

from Michael Mowery:

We had a conference call this morning with FactCheck regarding incorporating their articles to our database.  Clinton, myself, Eugene Kiely (editor of FactCheck), and Aous Abbas (FactCheck IT department) were on the call.

We established that Vote Smart has the permission to take and reprint material from FactCheck.  They do however, have some requests regarding how we display that material.  Here are the relevant excerpts from Eugene's follow-up email:

Here is how we ask that you handle our stuff on your site:
Links: Please preserve all the hyperlinks to original sources that are contained in our work. These are important to us and our readers, as they document what we are saying.
Formatting: Please preserve our formatting for block quotes, bullet points and so forth.
Footnotes (where applicable): Please preserve all "sources" citations in the "featured articles" that contain them. These in in footnote style -- rather academic, I grant you. But they are part of what distinguishes a "FactCheck.org"  featured article.
Bylines: We would like you to include a byline at the top, and a link back to the story on our site. "By FactCheck.org" is acceptable if you don't want to put the names of the individual author or authors at the top. But if you do that, please leave the names at the bottom, as they appear on our own site.
Editing: It's OK to edit for length if you need to, but please don't alter our wording. If you have an objection to the way we've put something, please let me know directly.  We want to avoid having different versions of the same story appearing on different sites. And since we must often choose our words carefully, there is always a possibility of an editor misunderstanding our intent and using words that change our meaning.
Updates/Corrections: Naturally, should we need to update or correct anything on our site, we would like you to make the same update or correction on your site. Updates occur when we get additional information, not infrequently. Corrections are rare, and it's our policy to note them and state what we got wrong, rather than just pretending our mistake never happened. Please let me know who the contact will be at PVS for updates and corrections. “
