Cover Letter
- Your cover letter is your introduction to the company. It is a writing sample. It is your chance to make your case of why you are perfect for the job while displaying your writing skills.
- Tailor your cover letter to the specific job you are applying for, using the job description as your template.
- Cover letters should be 3-5 paragraphs and should be written in business letter format. They should be addressed to the Human Resources Director. Do some research to find out his or her name. Don't write "Hiring Manager" or "To whom it may concern." Find out!
Paragraph 1: Your company is the best thing since sliced bread...
All companies whether non-profit, corporate, or government think what they are doing is the most important thing ever. Telling them that you feel that way too will make them think you belong on their team. It is almost impossible to overdo this. Enthusiasm and passion will make the difference between one person and another and can even make up for a lack of experience.
Paragraph 2: All my previous experiences have been the perfect preparation for this job.
This is the point where you compare your resume with the job description and you should pull out anything that is relevant to the job you are applying for. Discuss specific jobs and experiences.
More generally here you can list qualities that make you a good employee, backed up by your references. Reliable, fast learner, detail oriented, good with people etc.
Paragraph 3 or 4: Thank you and I look forward to talking with you in person about the position.
