Intern Job Description
As a Development and Communications Intern, you will be assisting the organization with our program marketing, public relations, social media and media outreach; all leading to our most important goal of FUNDRAISING.Specific tasks:
- Assisting with depositing on incoming money
- Assisting with thank you mailings and fulfilling materials requests
- Helping write and edit external communications to members & public
- Creating content for social media & email marketing; assisting with photography, graphic design as needed. They should be encouraged to bring any video/ photo editing software they have!
- Researching and assisting with new outreach campaigns
- Writing/ editing blog posts on current political/ legislative news
- Updating information in the media database as needed
- Maintaining press clips and making pitch calls to media
- Contacting members, potential members, and journalists, by phone, letter, or email, as needed
- Creating weekly newsletter to current staff and interns
- Assisting the Development & Communications Director as needed
Intern Learning Objectives
Over the course of the internship program, all Development and Communications interns should:
- Learn outreach strategies to cultivate current members and acquire new donors including mass mailings, email communication, and phone calls.
- Become familiar with various social media platforms, and learn to tailor Vote Smart's message based on the different media of engagement.
- Fine-tune their writing style so that it is clear, engaging, and non-partisan.
- Be able to present Vote Smart's non-partisan message in a variety of channels.
- Actively contribute to advertising and outreach campaigns by developing copy for ads, designing graphics, and taking photos.
