Installing the Brother HL-6180DW Printer
For some reason, installing this printer via CUPS (Linux) or network install (Windows) is problematic. Here are some steps that might help ease the pain.
Linux
Attached is an automated script that will install the printer drivers (also attached as a tarball), then manually configure the printer under CUPS. This can be done remotely or locally. For whatever reason the install requires both the Brother CUPS wrapper and the drivers themselves.
Windows
Attempts to install this printer automatically will end in an error notice (00000643 I believe). The drivers must be installed first, then the printer installed using TCP/IP. Here are some rough steps:
- Download the latest drivers from the Brother support page.
- Uncompress the .exe file into a convenient folder.
- Add printer as a TCP/IP printer. Be sure to uncheck the box asking if you want the O/S to query the printer.
- Specify "Have Disk" and navigate to the folder you just created with the drivers.
- Select the correct printer (in this case HL-6180DW).
- Send a test page.
