- Decide what job you want. This is always the hardest part! Once you know what you want to be when you grow up then you seek out experiences (jobs, internships, networking, volunteer, degrees etc) that will make you qualified and a desirable candidate for your dream career.
- Clean up your online image. Kids, drinking, gambling, anything they find will count against you.
- Use job boards that relate to the field, network, go to websites of desirable employers etc.
- Ask yourself what your priorities and requirements are for your future employer. Pay is an important factor for most people but other things to consider are the management structure, growth potential, job titles, benefits, flexibility, social responsibility etc. Knowing how important these things are to you will help you pick a job where you will be happy.
- Apply for jobs you are qualified for. If it says under "Qualifications" that you must have a Masters degree and 7 years experience, and you don't, then it may be better to apply for a different job in the same company and advance once you prove your worth.
- Apply for lots of jobs. This will reduce your stress level and increase your chances of getting a job you want. Don't stop looking and applying until you have accepted a job. Knowing you have other options will increase your ability to negotiate your worth.
- Applying for jobs is a job. Expect to spend several hours on each and every application.
