NieR: Automata 's demo is finally running on our PS4 consoles, giving everyone a taste of PlatinumGames' signature action in a JRPG flavor. Not only it looks lovely and plays even better, it also comes with at least part of its promised PS4 Pro support.





The gameplay of Nier: Automata is very similar to https://nierautomatafans.com/. The bulk of the demo plays like a beat 'em up action RPG, where 2B has a strong and weak attack that she can string together in combos and can jump and dodge, all while using the right bumper to provide support fire from her floating gun turret. Platforming is thrown into the mix, though nothing really too elaborate was encountered. There is a section of aerial combat that was actually quite fun and added some variety, and the scale of the enormous enemy that was fought in this dogfight fashion was an impressive spectacle to behold. While this was a sudden shift in play style the transition was seamless, suggesting that the execution of incorporating multiple game genres is improved this time around. The battle controls in Nier: Automata make combat as enjoyable to control as it is to watch.





Here you can see an attack animation for 2B in progress. In this attack, she uses both her sword and that large melee weapon on her right hand. 2B has a sense of elegance that we try to capture in all of her animations. It’s not enough for main characters’ animations to just look good – they have to feel good in players’ hands, too.








This year's Square Enix E3 2016 presentation largely centered around Final Fantasy 15 , and rightfully so - the game took a decade to develop and has been heralded as one of the best JRPGs in recent memory. Unfortunately, however, and perhaps unjustly, that meant Platinum Games' NieR: Automata took a backseat on the grandest gaming stage of them all. Ever since gamers caught a first look at NieR: Automata , they've been intrigued by NieR: Automata 's grim industrial world and mysterious android protagonist, and news about the upcoming title has been difficult to come





While the demo we played only featured one boss fight against a giant buzz saw contraption, gamers should expect many more large-scale boss battle segments littered throughout NeiR: Automata . On top of that, Saito also confirmed that there are more mounts aside of previously revealed deer and boars, commenting cryptically that not every mount may be an animal. The addition of several difficulty options this time around will also make for an easier playthrough experience, a sharp contrast from the difficult-by-default original NieR . Here’s a common situation: You’re patting yourself on the back for making an animation that looks super-cool and flows really nicely. Then, you put your perfect animation into the game engine and try controlling it, and it dawns on you that it’s too slow, too clunky. With tears in your eyes, you go back and cut away huge parts of your magnificent creation until it finally feels good.








NieR: Automata is certainly gathering a lot of attention lately thanks to the great gameplay showcased by the recently-released demo , but there is another element that turned many heads, the rather prominent behind of android protagonist YoRHa 2B, which is often generously displayed by her physics-enabled sk








While some among the easily offended crowd might take issue at the display, a whole lot of artistically-inclined fans appear to be appreciating, and that has given birth to a veritable cornucopia of fan art prominently showcasing 2B's rear





The difference appears to be less visible during cutscenes, where developers probably managed to squeeze a little more juice out of the standard PS4 due to the controlled rendering environment, bur it's still quite noticeable in elements like YoRHa 2B's hair.








That will likely change in 2017, however, if the past few weeks have been any indiciation. Not too long ago, Square Enix announced that there would be a link between Final Fantasy 15 and NieR: Automata , a statement that showed a strong belief in the latter's development progress. Today, developer Platinum Games upped the ante even further, unleashing a 4.4 GB demo of NieR: Automata in the PlayStation Store. The demo also got an updated description once it went l





On the other hand, Square Enix mentioned better lighting and shadows definition for PS4 Pro, but from what we can see in the comparison screenshots above, and playing the demo, those improvements might not yet be implemented in the demo. That's quite understandable, considering that we're still about two months from release.





After a bit of tweaking, we try it out and see how it feels. Then we tweak again, and test again, then tweak again, then… It’s repetitive work, but all this testing is essential to make NieR: Automata feel exactly as it should. Sometimes we end up spending an entire day just working out the perfect way to position enemies in a single fight scene!
