The best source for phone numbers is the election commission website if there is one, you can access the their website by looking under my state/ state and government resources/state on our website or by googling that state election commission. If the numbers are available some times you will have to go through campaign finance records. Candidate are required to provide phone numbers to their secretary of state a lot of times its just a matter of finding them.
Next we google the candidate. Keep a list of the campaign websites that you find. (This will help research later) If this yields nothing try searching for the candidates on any or all of the following websites:
- switchboard.com,
- Secretary of States
- party websites
- yellowpages.com,
- yellow.com,
- thegreenpapers,
- politics1.com,
- and any other website you can think of.
Keep a list of anyone who you cannot find a number for. Give lists to your supervisor.
1. Google the candidate's name to check for a campaign website (if there are too many results, you can add the word campaign or sometimes even phone to narrow them down).
2. Check the Secretary of State's website. The Campaign Finance sections are often very helpful. Most require candidates to file with a phone number.
3. Go to the State and County Political Parties sites. If you cannot find anything on their site, try having a staff member call their offices.
4. Use yellowbook.com to put in the candidate's last name and zip code to see if a match is available.
5. Use a reverse address search (http://www.411.com/reverse_address is one) to check for a phone number for the address.
6. Google the candidate's address (just the street line is sufficient, you may have to change words to abbreviations, e.g. Street to St or Str, if it is not a common address you can usually leave off Street, Avenue, Drive).
7. If the candidate has a website, but omits the phone number on his contact page, you can check who registered the website on WHOIS (http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp).
8. You can also search more locally than state political parties, as counties are more likely to have the correct information, but are not always indexed in google. (Just google the name of the city and the name of the state with the word county and you can usually easily find the county name.)
9. If you have a phone number you can google that or do a reverse to verify it (http://www.411.com/10668/reverse_phone is a site).
10. Democratic Underground keeps a list of campaign websites. Although it covers more of the federal races, you can usually find a couple state legislator sites there. (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_oet&address=358x1624)
