Fly-Fishing

Chris Carry and Scott Kulzer's Project Vote Smart Fly Fishing Guide 2011

General Guidelines
Wading:
Be careful when the runoff is very high, don't get swept away.
Scott pretty much wet waded all summer, but your feet will go numb quite often. If you have waders it definitely is more comfortable, but they aren't essential.

Remember to pay attention to the regulations if you plan to keep fish. You cannot keep cutthroat from Rock Creek/Middle Fork/East Fork etc. they are protected.

Fly Recommendations
Local Fly Shop: Flint Creek Outdoors, Great Shop! downtown Pburg by the White Front

List of Flies for this area:
Locations
- Middle Fork above the bridge, about 2 miles up from ranch

Leagues

Summer Softball

Directions
to Anaconda Softball Fields:
- Take a left out of the Ranch on to Moose Lake Rd.
- You will be on Moose Lake Rd for about 12miles, take a right at the end onto Hwy 38 (Skahalkho Pass)
- Hwy 38 comes to a “T” intersection, go right, onto Hwy 1
- You will stay on Hwy 1 all the way through Anaconda, there will be a McDonald’s on your left, go left on that road (sorry I don’t know the street name).
- You are going to then take an immediate left just past McDonalds when the street you are on comes to a “T” intersection.
- There is a oil change place (Jiffy Lube?) on your right immediatley after you turn, go right on the street just past the oil change place the softball fields are straight ahead

Tournaments

Best practice: include the description of the event and how to win, the rules (these need to be as specific as possible to avoid confusion, cheating (yes, it actually happens), etc.), the number of people from each team who will participate, and the number of points awarded to the winning team.

Traditionally we've held competition games during lunch from around 1-1:30 pm because staff who lived in town found this to be most convenient, and it still allows for people to eat lunch. You may want to assign an extra person per team to account for any chore conflicts or absences.

Basketball

Scoring
-Our scoring system will be first to 11, win by two, with a max score of 15.
-The game will start with either a coin flip or a ‘shoot for ball’ scenario.
-Games will be played to 15 points.
-We will score 1s and 2s, meaning any shot that goes in from outside of the 3-point line will be worth 2 points, and anything inside is worth 1.
-Teams must win by (at least) two points, and you don’t have to score exactly 15 to win – if you have 14 and hit a 2-point shot, you still win.
-For the sake of time, we will have maximum score rule, which will be 21. If that situation arises, the first team to hit 21 wins.
-We will employ a make-it – take-it rule after 5pts. This means that when your team scores a point, you are rewarded by getting the ball back for another possession.

Fouls
-As usual with pickup basketball, everyone will call his or her own fouls. If you think you get fouled, make sure to call it out immediately.
-There will be no free throws – if you get fouled, you take the ball up top and check it back in.
-If self-officiating gets difficult, someone that is not playing will need to step in to officiate.

Double Dribble
-Dribbling is bouncing the ball with 1 hand using your fingertips instead of your palm so that it rebounds back to yourself. A double dribble is when you dribble with two hands or pick the ball up and then bounce it again – that is illegal and will be called a turnover. -We probably won’t be too strict at first, but be careful with this.

Boundaries
-Along the baseline (closest to basket), the tennis boards and fence is considered out of bounds. The pole (base of basketball hoop) is also considered out. Along each side, out of bounds is the fence. Closer to the tennis net there is a line (Service line?) that will be the top boundary.

Traveling
-A pivot takes place when a player who is holding the ball steps once or more than once in any direction with the same foot, while the other foot, called the pivot foot, is kept at its point of contact with the playing court.
-Lifting the pivot foot, taking multiple steps, or shuffling the feet before starting a dribble.
-While holding the ball, jumping and returning to the floor without releasing the ball.
-A player who receives the ball while he is progressing or upon completion of a dribble, may take two steps in coming to a stop, passing or shooting the ball.

Volleyball

Hitting
Each team is allowed to have maximum of three touches before hitting the ball over the net.
Same player can not touch the ball twice in a row
A block does not count as a touch
You are ALLOWED to play the ball off the net.
The ball has to travel between the antennas/poles (or the imagined extensions of them) when flying to the other side of the net.
Players are NOT allowed to catch, hold or throw the ball.
Players are NOT allowed to hit or block the opponent’s serve.
It is LEGAL to hit the ball with any part of the body, the foot and leg included. (Earlier it was a foul to kick the ball.)
Players are NOT allowed to touch the net while the ball is in the play. You can reach over the net provided that you do not touch it.
Carry – The rulebook for international volleyball apparently defines a carry as “prolonged contact.” (See below for more)

Serving
Serve can be performed by hand or any part of the arm. (Kick is not allowed in serving).
Serve is performed by the right-back player, but he or she can serve from any area behind the line
At the moment of the serve, the player has to be in the serving area (behind the line)
Players can’t block a serve – only set or bump

Scoring
Referee calls the ball “IN”, if any part of it hits the lines. (Imagine the ball is painted. If the ball left a mark that touches the lines, the ball is judged IN)
A point is scored after each serve AKA rally scoring.
After EACH point, the team must rotate players. This prevents teams from sitting tall players in front of the net. Because we have 5 players on each team, we will situate two in front, two in back, and one in the middle.
Ball is ruled OUT, if
The ball lands outside the boundary lines (without touching the opponent)
The ball hits the antenna/poles
Each match will be best of 3. The first two games will be played to 21 points, and the 3rd game (if necessary) will be played to 15 points. A difference of two points is required to the winning team, which means the game cannot end 21-20, or 15-14.

More on Carry/lift/throw
– from reading around on the internet, it sounds like it’s a very subjective rule or call for the referee to make… to avoid us getting into arguments, I would recommend not hitting the ball with an open palm because then you leave the call up to the individual that happens to be refereeing for us that day. Here are a couple different things I found online:
“An open palm can easily lend itself to a carry. As you see the contact, does the ball visibly come to rest in the hand, or does it rebound somewhat crisply off a stiff palm? The likelihood of a carry increases if the fingers of the open palm are formed around the ball. If the fingers are pulled back, and the palm stiffened, however, it's easier to pop the ball up cleanly without carrying it. If the ball pops off the open hand, it's legal, albeit ugly.”

“contact with an open hand upwards from the waist is often (but not always) a fault.”

“When you push the ball over, do you keep it in your hand a prolonged time?  If you do, then it's illegal.  The ref shouldn't make the call by the sound, or by how the hands are shaped, but just by "Was the ball held?  Was it thrown? Did it stick to the player's hand?”

So again, it sounds like a big gray area. While we are playing, do your best to actually hit/bump the ball instead of lifting it up/over the net and letting it rest on your hand/palm.

-60ft x 30ft? Each side should be 30 ft x 30 ft.

Olympic Events

Currently, previous schedules and events can be found in the lodge drive and public drive

Traditions
Events that are tradition during the summer Olympics (read: people will be kind of upset if you don't include these):
Trivia
The questions should be completely objective (no points for creativity, etc.) and things that new people would know as well as old people (i.e. PVS questions should be things new people would be as likely to know, etc.).
