Legislative Wrap-Up
Wrap-Up Research
Researching for your legislative Wrap Up should take quite a bit of time, however it will be significantly easier to write your wrap-up if you compile quality research. We have compiled a list of useful questions that you will need to answer, but this is just a starting point for your research. You may add any additional information and links to your "Research" doc.
Each state has its separate folder within the Google drive. And within each state folder, you will find a "Research" doc with questions and space for responses. Edit this doc with the answers to the questions and any other information that you would like to include. Once you have finished filling out the research doc, you will leave it on the drive so that the people editing your work can also utilize your information. We have also included an example for the 2013 Indiana session titled “Lege Wrap Up Research - 2013 Indiana” within the "Resources" folder on the Google drive.
Where to start?
The first step in this project is to get familiar with what happened during the legislative session. Usually most local media outlets or newspapers will have a "legislative summary" article published just after the end of the session. Additionally, advocacy groups may also publish statements or information on the legislation that most effected their industry. We have a page of media sources, but this by no means is an exhaustive list. Lastly, it will be helpful to see what bills were selected as Key Votes for the legislative session. Remember that each one of our bills selected has a "press file" on UT Box. If you cannot find enough information to establish the supporters and opposition viewpoints, then you can start to research other news articles that can help provide that information.
FYI... The information regarding the bills introduced, passed, vetoed, etc. can usually be found under the "Session Statistics" (left hand side) on this website. However, be sure to select the correct legislative session and be sure that the dates match up.
