Revision history for CollectionofElectionResults

===Collection of Election Results----===
**Unofficial Results**
Find results: Unofficial election results should be retrieved the morning after an election. Considering that NY Times clearly lists the winners, it is easier to use the New York Times first to determine winners for most elections (Washington Post and Politico are also good for federal and some statewide races, but NYT is the only one that also covers state elections too). Election Results from the Secretary of States should be used for races that are not 100% reporting or Too Close to Call elections.
If you cannot find results, contact the state's election office directly (Usually Secretary of State Websites or State Board of Election websites). Results may have to be pieced together from different sources, making sure every office and district is accounted for. If the results only include contested races, the most up-to-date candidate list will be used to select winners in conjunction with the results.
- Save results to the appropriate folder in the research drive (Only do so if you are given permission by the Elections Director or Elections Monitoring Associate)
**Official, Certified Election Results**
Certified election results will be available on the Secretaries of States websites. Contact the SOS if certified results are not available shortly after the election, or if it is unclear whether the results on their site are official or not.

Deletions:
If you cannot find results from any news source or any of the previous links, hold off until something becomes available. You might want to contact the state's election office- they should be able to direct you somewhere. Worse comes to worst, you might have to piece together results from different sources, making sure every office and district is accounted for.
Print off these results and attach/fill-out the appropriate list activity log. Delegate as appropriate.
These will be available on the Secretary of State's website. You will need to find out the date of which the official results are expected to be available. For the General Election, [[http://nass.org the National Association of Secretaries of State]] may provide a state-by-state listing of these dates. Otherwise, call the Secretary of State's office to ask when they will be available, and add this date to [[http://www.google.com/calendar/render?tab=mc Google Calendar]]. If it is still not appearing on their website within a few days of that date, or it is unclear whether the results on their site are official or not, call the SOS office again.
Once you retrieve these results, print them off and attach/fill-out the appropriate list activity log. Delegate as appropriate.

The day after the election, you will want to retrieve Unofficial Election Results. Secretary of State websites should be your first stop on your quest for Unofficial Results. Results furnished by the Secretary of State's office are preferred, but not all states make them available and sometimes they are not in a very usable format. If it is not available on the SOS website or in a poor format, check out [[http://www.thegreenpapers.com/ The Green Papers]], who will likely be able to direct you to a good source. If they don't have a source, try to find a respected news media source. Other good sources that cover most races in every state:
