Intern Job Description
As a Development and Communications Intern, you will be assisting the organization with our membership and program marketing, public relations, social media and media outreach; all leading to the most important goal of the department, FUNDRAISING. This is an exciting time to be a part of the dev/comm department because of not only the special attention our organization receives during a major election year, but also, we've only recently launched some amazing new tools for voters including the newly redesigned website at votesmart.org, and the 2012 version of the award-winning VoteEasy tool.Specific tasks:
- Providing social media content on Facebook, Twitter, etc.
- Conducting various research assignments and writing reports
- Researching and writing blog entries
- Updating information in the media database as needed
- Contacting members, potential members, and journalists, by phone or email, as needed
- Utilizing your (what we hope are) amazing skills with excel & word
- Assisting with photography, videography, and graphic design; dependent on previous experience and available equipment (this would be the time to ask you: did you bring a nice camera and/or video camera? Let us know...)
Remember: Our organization remains heavily dependent on direct mail solicitations (a majority of our current members are over the age of 60 and would rather send their contributions through the mail). Therefore, you will you will be asked to deal with the less glamorous aspect of the department which includes sorting incoming mail, processing donations, completing "third checks," and assisting with in-house mass mailings, among other monotonous tasks.
At some point you may also be asked to assist in the following areas:
Assisting the Political Courage Test and Research DepartmentsThere two departments cover the majority of the information our organization provides. and therefore, their needs take priority.
The Voters' Resource Hotline
The hotline is the service that makes us unique among similar research organizations and is relied on by many people, so it is a critical piece to the Research Division. Each person covering the hotline will have a set shift in which they cover the line. Those answering the hotline will be researching and responding to information requests from researchers, students, and the general public.
Outside Work
Most of our outdoor maintenance tasks take place during the summer while the weather is nice. Interested interns may have the opportunity to participate in some of the following activities instead of spending a day in the office: wood gathering and splitting, trail maintenance, assisting in caring for horses, upkeep of paddle boats and canoes, tennis court repairs, painting, shoveling, landscaping, etc.
